In the US you buy SOL on a regulated exchange, then (ideally) move it to a wallet you control. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes, most of it identity verification.

Exchange availability differs by state, and fees change often. Check each exchange's current fee page and supported-states list before you deposit.

1. Pick an exchange

2. Create and verify your account

You’ll need your legal name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and a photo ID. This is required by US law for every regulated exchange. An exchange that skips it isn’t regulated.

Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app (not SMS) before you deposit anything.

3. Add money

  • Bank transfer (ACH): cheapest; funds may take a few days to become withdrawable.
  • Debit card: instant, but noticeably more expensive.
  • Wire: worth it only for large amounts.

4. Buy SOL

Search for SOL, enter an amount in dollars, and confirm. To pay less, use the exchange’s advanced trading screen (Coinbase Advanced, Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader) and place a limit order instead of a market buy.

  1. Create a Solana wallet (guide) and copy its address.
  2. On the exchange, choose Withdraw / Send → SOL.
  3. Pick the Solana network.
  4. Send a small test amount first, then the rest.

If you’re holding a meaningful amount for the long term, a hardware wallet keeps the keys off your phone and computer.

6. Keep records for taxes

The IRS treats crypto as property: selling, swapping or spending SOL can create a taxable gain or loss. US exchanges now report sales to the IRS, so keep:

  • date, amount and price of every purchase;
  • every sale, swap or transfer between your own wallets.

Most exchanges let you download a full history as a CSV. Download it once a year. This isn’t tax advice; a tax professional can tell you what applies to you.

Common questions

Can I buy SOL with PayPal or Venmo? Some exchanges accept PayPal in some states, usually at higher fees. Bank transfer is almost always cheaper.

What’s the minimum? Most exchanges let you start with a few dollars.

Is my SOL safe on the exchange? Regulated exchanges are generally reliable, but the exchange holds the keys. For larger amounts, self-custody is safer.
